WARREN, NJ -Be patient regarding co-curricular clubs at Watchung Hills. Superintendent Dr.Elizabeth Jewett addressed clubs during superintendent comments during the Tuesday Board of Education meeting. The goal of the administration and the board is to run all clubs, she said. Clubs and advisors will be approved in waves as they always are. In some cases they are waiting for guidance from over arching organizations regarding changes in timing for some of the club events.
Board member Bob Morrison reiterated what Jewett said and expressed his dismay that students were unnecessarily stressed by rumors regarding the canceling of clubs.
Board member and senior parent Susan Ober also addressed the issue and cautioned parents and students from taking people’s opinions and posts on social media as fact. And also thanked the school and all involved for hosting the ACT test last weekend exclusively for Watchung Hills seniors.
The board then heard emailed public commentary, most regarding clubs, and live comments regarding clubs.
Senior and RoboWarriors’ captain Charlie Margulies spoke regarding robotics. See video here
And junior Shiv Goel spoke regarding Model UN. See video here
Teacher Michael Gangluff spoke on clubs
After commentary Morrison said,” I want to be clear. We looked at all of the clubs in the Ed( education) committee meeting . And looked at all of those that can run at this point in time and those are the ones that are on the agenda for approval tonight. There are many clubs where we do not have advisors, largely in part because the advisors did not respond to the survey that went out about the clubs. There are other clubs that can’t run due to other considerations including waiting for things to come from the governing bodies. And some of the clubs are scheduled to run in the spring and don’t need to be approved tonight. And some of the clubs aren’t staffed because we don’t have the staff in place yet. I believe this has been explained to faculty members. I believe this has been explained to the Union. This farce that’s going on right now is inexcusable. In this environment, I expect better.”
